R U OK? Day at Baker Refrigeration: Start the Conversation
We understand the importance of mental health and creating a supportive environment where employees feel comfortable asking, “R U OK?” This simple question can have a profound impact on someone’s wellbeing. As a team, we have a responsibility to foster a culture that encourages these conversations, ensuring a safe and healthy workplace not just physically, but mentally as well.
Engaging in conversations can make a real difference for those who may be going through a tough time. Trust your instincts and reach out—it could be the support they need.
Know When to Ask “R U OK?”
You can ask on any day, not just the awareness raising day.
If you sense that someone might be struggling, there are key signs that may signal it’s time to check in:
- They seem out of sorts or more withdrawn than usual
- They’re agitated or not their usual self
- You have a gut feeling something is off
How to Start the Conversation
We encourage everyone to follow these four steps when asking someone if they’re OK:
- Ask R U OK? “You don’t seem yourself lately—want to talk about it?”
- Listen “I’m here to listen if you want to talk more.”
- Encourage Action “Have you spoken to your doctor about this? What do you think might help?”
- Check In “Have things improved for you since our last chat? Just wanted to check in.”
By starting a conversation and addressing any changes you’ve noticed, you can help a friend, colleague, or family member open up. If they’re not OK, following these steps can show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to manage their situation. If they are OK, they’ll appreciate that someone cared enough to ask.
