R404A Important Information
In 2024 & 2025 we mentioned the Australian Government’s R404A refrigerant “phase-down” of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants.
R404A supply constraints are now being observed in the market.
The 2026 import quota reduction has now come into effect, with total refrigerant imports decreasing and further reductions scheduled.
To better understand the potential impact on stores in Australia, we reviewed availability across several suppliers for both R404A and its commonly used retrofit alternatives, R448A and R452A.
Two of the five major importers declined to provide specific data; however, they have advised that R404A is likely to become increasingly scarce within the next six months.
They also noted that retrofit refrigerants like R448A and R452A may face longer-term supply pressure over the next 6–10 years with increasing demand.
Given this outlook, we would like to encourage you to begin planning retrofit strategies in the short term, while also considering staged equipment replacement over the coming years.
We do not want your store caught short and unable to operate its R404A refrigeration.
