Australia has been on a steady march toward transcritical CO₂ refrigeration for nearly two decades now. The first supermarket system was commissioned back in December 2007 and the market has grown steadily since, particularly in the last five years as the majority of Australian supermarkets have all made public commitments to CO₂ in new stores and major retrofits.
At Baker Refrigeration we have installed transcritical CO2 at just over 150 sites, this week we looked into how our work fits into the bigger picture, how does 150 sites compare to the overall market in Australia?

That quote is from Marc Chasserot, CEO of ATMOsphere, in their 2024 report. It reflects what we’re seeing across Australia, CO₂ is becoming the standard in supermarket refrigeration. The real question is how quickly the transition happens and who has the capability to deliver it at scale.

With approximately 425 transcritical CO₂ supermarket sites across Australia, Baker Refrigeration has delivered more than 150 installations, representing around 36% of the market.
From major supermarket chains to independent retailers, Baker Refrigeration continues to support one of Australia’s largest transcritical CO₂ installation and TC service footprints.
What This Tells Us About the Road Ahead
Australia’s transcritical CO₂ market is at an inflection point. At 8.5% supermarket penetration, there are still roughly 3,900 supermarkets in this country that have not yet made the switch.
The market is maturing which is good news for Australia’s refrigeration sector and its emissions commitments overall.
