Baker Refrigeration Managing Director Mike Baker was among a quality lineup of HVAC&R professionals at the AIRAH WA HVAC&R Emerging Trends Symposium, presenting on a topic that continues to be key in guiding the direction of refrigeration – “Natural Refrigerants: Here to Stay.”
Organised by the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH), the half-day symposium brought together the HVAC&R industry from across Perth to share developing technology, sustainability and regulatory trends impacting the sector.

Mike’s talk covered the accelerated phase-down of high-GWP refrigerants in Australia and the global transition to sustainable alternatives such as CO₂ (R744) and R290.
He discussed the tightening import quota, rising refrigerant prices and how these shifts in the marketplace are accelerating the adoption of natural refrigerants across both supermarket and commercial realms.
“Natural refrigerants aren’t the future – they’re the present,” Mike said. “With the right system design, training and collaboration, CO₂ and R290 can deliver improved performance, energy efficiency and sustainability outcomes.”
